India beat New Zealand but still wait for quarterfinal spot: Oman vs Bahrain holds the key

Fukuoka, Japan - Jerome Vinith Charles and his teammates earned their first victory at the 2026 AVC Men's Volleyball Asian Championship, but the joy is not complete yet. India swept New Zealand 25-22, 25-18, 25-21, yet their quarterfinal spot still depends on another match, one they will not play. India finished Pool B in third place with a 1-2 record. If Oman earn a three-point win over Bahrain, Oman will leapfrog India. If Bahrain beat Oman 3-0, the two sides will be separated by point ratio. In every other scenario, India advance to the quarterfinals. Jerome Vinith Charles led India with 19 points, including two kill blocks. Chirag Yadav added 14 points with three aces and one block, while Amit Balwan Singh contributed 13 points and two blocks. For New Zealand, Seth Dylan Grant scored 15 points, John McManaway had 13 and Mana Placid added 12. New Zealand's loss ended their quarterfinal hopes. Japan dominated Australia 25-20, 25-13, 25-21 in front of around 6,500 home fans at Kitakyushu City Gymnasium. Yuji Nishida recorded a match-high 16 points with an 82 percent attack success rate. Ran Takahashi delivered five aces and 13 points. Australia finished second in Pool A with a 2-1 record. Korea also completed their group stage with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 win over Qatar. Jaeyoung Lim led Korea with 15 points, while Qatar's Mubarak Musa Thiik Madut was the top scorer of the match with 17 points. The tournament serves as an Olympic qualifier for Los Angeles 2028 and a pathway to the 2027 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Cup.
